SCHIZOPHRENIA

Schizophrenia is a chronic, debilitating, neurodevelopmental & neurodegenerative psychiatric disorder characterized by distorted pattern of thinking and perception.

The dopamine, glutamate, serotonin, norepinephrine and glycine neurotransmitter system of brain is disturbed which causes various symptoms of schizophrenia as per the affected chemical. There are common domains of symptoms of schizophrenia.

  • Positive Symptoms – Delusions - suspiciousness and unusual thought content – usually Delusion of Persecution, Reference, Infidelity Hallucinations - usually auditory, visual or tactile

  • Negative Symptoms – Social withdrawal, poor self-care, anhedonia, decrease interaction

  • Behavioral – Violence, impulsivity, disinhibition, hypersexuality or uncontrolled anger outbursts

  • Mood – affective symptoms like euphoria or depression are commonly seen in schizophrenia

  • Cognitive – In long term cases of schizophrenia there are problems in memory registration and recall. As it is a chronically progressive disorder patients suffering from schizophrenia may even show poor emotional and social responses and become less productive.


Yes, it is true that Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness. However, to diagnose a case as suffering from schizophrenia an individual should be constantly suffering from these symptoms for a period of more than 6 months.
